Data Strategy: The Backbone of Modern Business Success

What is a Data Strategy and why do we need it?

A robust data strategy is crucial for success in today's data-driven world. It encompasses the optimization of data collection, storage, management, and utilization to make informed decisions and gain competitive advantages. The application of AI, analytics, and the implementation of digitalization initiatives benefit from it, while regulatory requirements often make it essential.

What components does a Data Strategy include and what is its goal?

Starting top-down, its primary goal is to ensure that a company's data initiatives generate value. Thus, measures for the profitable use of data should not be viewed in isolation but must be aligned with the company's strategy. Products and processes should benefit from data, and data should enable new offerings for the company.

For example, your data requirements will differ if, strategically, you aim to position your company as an ecological leader, a price leader, or a niche provider in your industry. In the first case, high-quality ESG data will play a significant role in the data strategy, while in the second case, real-time competitor price information will be crucial, and in the third, detailed information on customer requirements might be the focus.

In any case, your desired business orientation will impact the use and requirements of data. Simultaneously, it is necessary to keep compliance in mind and establish a corresponding organizational structure within the company.

What are key questions to consider in the context of data management?

Developing a clear and coherent roadmap for defining and implementing your individual data strategy is the key success factor for making data sustainably valuable for your company.

  • What measures are in place to improve data quality and data lifecycle management?

Technological

  • What requirements do your use cases (real-time, AI, analytics, standard reporting, IoT, structured/unstructured data) place on the IT architecture and data platform?
